Graphcore - IPU Innovations to Good Supercomputers

Graphcore, a pioneering AI hardware company based in Bristol, UK, is making significant strides in the development of cutting-edge technologies designed to accelerate machine learning and artificial intelligence. Graphcore has become known for its unique approach to AI processing through the creation of the Intelligence Processing Unit (IPU).

At the core of Graphcore's innovation is the IPU, a processor specifically designed to handle the complex and highly parallel nature of AI workloads. Unlike traditional CPUs and GPUs, the IPU is optimized for the sparsity and massive parallelism inherent in AI and machine learning tasks. This allows for more efficient processing, faster training times, and reduced energy consumption.

The company's second-generation IPU, the Colossus MK2, boasts 59.4 billion transistors and supports sparse arithmetic operations, making it exceptionally efficient for both training and inference of AI models. The IPU-Machine M2000, one of their flagship products, integrates four MK2 IPUs and provides an impressive 1 PetaFlop of compute power in a compact form factor, aimed at data center deployment.

Graphcore is also developing the "Good" computer, named after the computer science pioneer Jack Good. Set to be released sometime in 2024, this ultra-intelligent AI supercomputer aims to surpass the computational capacity of the human brain, with over 10 Exa-Flops of AI compute and up to 4 Petabytes of memory.

The company was founded by Nigel Toon and Simon Knowles. To date, they have a $2.7 billion valuation.
