Orbital Insight - decoding Earth from above

The capacity to draw information from vast data can be transformative in this digital age. Orbital Insight, a geospatial analytics company, uses the power of artificial intelligence (AI) and computer vision to translate satellite and drone pictures into valuable insights.

Orbital Insight begins its analysis by collaborating with a number of satellite and drone firms, collecting a huge number of daily photos spanning a significant portion of the Earth's surface. However, the amount of unprocessed information represented by these photos in their raw form is enormous.

Orbital Insight uses advanced deep learning algorithms that are capable of detecting, identifying, and monitoring a wide range of objects and activities to make use of this data. These algorithms can detect information such as the number of vehicles in a mall parking lot or changes in the location of oil storage tanks throughout the world.

Applications for the insights generated by Orbital Insight's analytics are numerous. Such information is useful for stock market forecasts, company health evaluations, and a deeper knowledge of macroeconomic factors, for example, in the financial sector.  On the other hand, retailers can evaluate the performance of their stores by examining the volume of traffic in their parking lots. Analytics in agriculture help predict crop yields, track agricultural growth, or even identify early signs of insect infestations. Also energy industries can benefit from having a better understanding of global oil storage which is important, because it may provide information about future price changes.

The company was founded in 2013 by David J. La Placa, James Crawford, and Jeff Stein. To date, they have raised $130.7 million.
