AI is playing a significant role in how government agencies are protecting citizens’ safety around the world. Here are some ways in which AI helps government agencies maintain law and order:

  • Surveillance and Monitoring: AI-powered surveillance systems are better able to process multiple video streams to distinguish people with outstanding warrants, detect unattended objects, and identify unusual behaviors. Faster reaction times are achieved by using complex algorithms that process data in real-time and immediately inform authorities.
  • Crime Prediction and Prevention: Large-scale crime data sets may be analyzed by AI systems to find trends and predict crime hotspots. These predictions help law enforcement organizations allocate their resources more effectively. Another problem that is plaguing police departments around the country is that the rate of police being hired is dwindling each year. In fact, in 2021, it has been reported that police hiring rates fell by 5% and resignations and retirements increased by 18% and 45% respectively. AI can help soften the blow to the lack of personnel by processing data much faster and providing helpful statistics to active police.
  • Disaster Response: It's important to act swiftly and efficiently in the event of a natural disaster. Drones with AI capabilities may carry out search and rescue operations while providing emergency services with real-time information. India loses an estimated $7.4 billion due to damages from floods annually. So in 2018, the government partnered with Google to have AI monitor water data, geospatial data, etc. to warn citizens of a flood so they can evacuate before it happens.
  • Cybersecurity: Public safety in the digital era involves both physical security and cybersecurity. Compared to traditional firewalls or human monitoring, AI-powered systems can monitor network behavior, identify anomalies and defend against cyberattacks more effectively.

This market has been very valuable in the past couple of years. The Public Safety/Security AI sector is projected to reach $71 billion by 2030, with CAGR of 29.3% from 2023. Artificial intelligence (AI) is becoming more and more important in public service, from surveillance and crime prevention to disaster relief and cybersecurity. By innovating further, AI can become a powerful tool in making our communities safer and more at ease.
